A new chapter in Nevada State University Athletics began Saturday as the Scorpions' inaugural women's and men's cross country teams competed in their first-ever race at the Firestorm Classic, hosted by Arizona Christian University.
The Scorpions opened their inaugural season with strong team performances, as the women finished third and the men placed fifth.
In the women's 6K, Julianna Ondrisko led Nevada State, finishing 16th out of 25 runners with a time of 25:54. Eliza Miller followed in 19th at 26:41, while Monica Nieto crossed the line at 30:14 to finish 21st.
Semaj Hall paced Nevada State in the men's 8K, finishing 38th out of 58 competitors with a time of 30:14. Bryan Aleman followed in 42nd at 31:46, with Diego Avelar-Avila close behind in 43rd at 31:51.
"I'm so very excited with how this group ran today," Head Coach Roy Session said. "The women's team finished third and the men's team finished fifth. We have a lot of work to do to get where we want to be. The goal right now is to continue to get better every race and build off today. The athletes are excited and ready to get back to work."
With their first race officially in the books, the Scorpions will look to build on their historic debut as the inaugural cross country season continues.
